I worked on this one in the evenings while our tulips blossomed here in South Carolina, in between other projects. While our actual tulips have come and gone, these are here to stay! A cheerful addition to any home, all year round.

This is one of my favorite paintings I’ve ever made. Truth be told, I almost didn’t paint it, because I was intimidated by the texture of the toast. So this now serves as a reminder to myself that if we don’t push ourselves to attempt the things we’re afraid of, we’ll never know if we could, in fact, succeed.

According to my dictionary, extrospection is the “examination or observation of what is outside oneself —opposed to introspection”. Like a lot of artists, I’m pretty introverted. But to make art we also have to observe a lot. As I painted this beautiful creature, it occurred to me how very alert and observant birds are. It’s hard to spend any amount of time looking into that lovely golden eye and not feel watched in return.
